Michel Modell, American Cancer Society’s inaugural Artist of the Year winner, designed Love Taking Flight in honor of her late husband. After cancer tore through her and her barely two-year-old twins’ lives like a storm they never saw coming, Modell’s immense grief made her stop painting. But her children needed her, and the world kept spinning, indifferent to her heartbreak, so she continued forward. When she returned to painting, she began painting butterflies. Each one representing the loss and beauty, survival and love a memory holds of a loved one.
The American Cancer Society’s Artist of the Year competition invited artists and designers to submit original artwork in support of the fight against cancer. The winning piece is featured on ACS merchandise, with all proceeds helping fund lifesaving research, patient support programs, and advocacy efforts. Through creativity and compassion, participating artists make a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by cancer.
